Area of an Ellipse

πab

The area of an ellipse can be found by the following formula area = Πab
  • where b is the distance from the center to a co-vertex
  • a is the distance from the center to a vertex

Example of Area of of an Ellipse

In the ellipse below a is 6 and b is 2 so the area is 12Π

The special case of a circle's area

A circle is a special case of an ellipse. Analogous to the fact that a square is a kind of rectangle, a circle is a special case of an ellipse. The formula for the area of a circle is Πr² . However, since a circle is an ellipse with equal major and minor axes, the formula formula for the ellipse's are is equivalent to the formula for area of a circle.
