The Princeton Review and DeSoto Independent School District Team Up to Support 8th and 9th Grade Students
NEW YORK and DESOTO, July 16, 2021 /— The Princeton Review®, one of the world's largest education services companies, is delighted to announce its partnership with DeSoto Independent School District, whose 12 campuses serve the Texas communities of DeSoto, Glenn Heights, and Ovilla, to provide online tutoring from Tutor.com as well as test prep services for 1,400 students in grades 8 and 9.
The partnership, funded by DeSoto ISD’s Next Generation GEAR UP (Gaining Earning Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), provides 24/7, on-demand, 1-to-1 learning support from Tutor.com’s network of more than 3,000 expert tutors for students at three middle schools and one high school in the district. Students can connect quickly to get help in any of 138 subjects, including bilingual Spanish offerings and AP® subjects, drop-off writing services, practice quizzes, and video lessons. Through the partnership, they can also access PSAT®, SAT®, and ACT® test prep from The Princeton Review.
“We are honored to support the ambitious goals of DeSoto students,” said Tanya Walker, Senior Executive Director, Educational Partnerships, The Princeton Review. “Our goal is to provide encouraging academic support that helps students realize their dreams for higher education and beyond. In customizing DeSoto’s tutoring program, we were impressed by—and share—the commitment of district leaders, teachers, parents, and students to promoting student success.”
Since the launch of the partnership several months ago, the subjects most frequently covered in tutoring sessions have been physics (motion, forces, and energy), pre-calculus (trigonometric functions), and algebra (linear equations). In addition to academic tutoring, students may access college entrance exam resources. About 100 eighth-grade students are receiving PSAT prep from The Princeton Review each year, and many continue with SAT and ACT self-paced prep.
“I am appreciative that DeSoto ISD’s Next Generation GEAR UP grant has The Princeton Review as a partner,” said Jereese H. Johnson, Project Director, DeSoto ISD—Next Generation GEAR UP. “The opportunities that our cohort of students will receive over the next five years will assist our district in ensuring that our students are college-, career-, and military-ready by the time they graduate, and will prepare them for post-secondary pathways that they choose.”
In post-session tutoring surveys, students were unanimous in touting the impact of on-demand, 1-to-1 support: 100% of students said they would recommend the service to a friend; 100% said that it was helping them improve their grades; and 100% said that it was helping them be more confident with their school work. In open-ended responses, students expressed appreciation for their tutors’ support. A student at East Middle School wrote, “The tutor was nice and helpful. He allowed me to show my process, then he corrected any mistakes I made with explanations.” Another, from McCowan Middle School, praised the learning process: “I loved this tutor! He explained everything very well!”
In addition to supporting students, the partnership enables district teachers and staff to access real-time data and analytics through a Client Portal. There, they can view a dashboard with actionable data for educators to address curricular challenges and provide just-in-time support for students who need it.
